Christian Boltanski's deal with the devil PDF Print E-mail

From the first of January 2010, four cameras will permanently film Christian Boltanski's life. The images will be broadcast live in a Tasmanian cave in which a rich collector lives, a professional gambler and virtuoso of calculation, who has purchased the artwork. The cave will be open to all and anyone can follow the daily life of the artist millions of miles from his studio. When Christian Boltanski dies, there will be nothing left to film. The life of the artist, through a permanently filmed intrusion (but limited to his studio), is the object of a bet for money: the work was sold as a life annuity. "If I die in the next eight years, he will be the beneficiary. If I live more than eight years, he loses money. (…) I made a deal with the devil and I indeed hope to win."

A challenge cast in the teeth of destiny? A final twist and turn from an artist who has constantly sought to question "chance, God’s law, death"? This deal with the devil is that of a man asking if we can fight against the end, a man who wishes to produce more and more works which are distant, relatively inaccessible without being exclusive, and of which only a few individuals can say: “this is”, whether it be the Heart Archives on an island in a Japanese sea or the project in the Tasmanian cave. Somewhere in the world the artist’s work exists in silence. It falls to everyone to be ready to listen.
